you do not necessarily need to filter it but it will certainly make for better water quality and health. A feature like this where the pond acts like a collection spot definitely benefits from filtration because overtime debris and nutrients will accumulate and need to be dealt with. Hope this helps.

If the water is stagnant or still and the mosquitoes can complete their life cycle, yes, they will be there. If possible, the best way to prevent them is to have circulation in the water.

Early spring is best here in Michigan.

True, a lot of the branches can just snap off and we are sure it is much faster. Depending on the variety we have had some issues where the snapping is partial or doesn't completely break off smoothly and it can slice down the stem if pulled. Darin, many of our water features do have rubber liners and plastic equipment. Our water features once up and running provide an ideal ecosystem for many different wildlife and this is often done in urban areas where their natural habitats have been destroyed or removed. Thank you for your comment and for following us.

Some varieties definitely send out runners, mine (Little Spire) included. Not nearly as aggressive as yours though. Runners are best pruned in the Spring as close to the mother plant as possible.
